In a similar
way Leong's landscape series relies upon famous subjects for visual
juxtapositions. He fuses both Australian and Chinese landscapes
to create puzzling views.
'The Eighth
Moon', for instance, features the Great Wall of China in the foreground
overlooking Ayers Rock in the background. Both structures are monumental
in size. They seem to jar against one another, not so much because
of their competing scale but because of their origins. We know the
Great Wall as an historical symbol of China and Ayers Rock as a
spiritual site for Aboriginal Australians. Each a significant landmark
within their respective country, a view of them together within
the same landscape is a bewildering sight.
Utilising two
more Asutralian and Chinese landmarks, 'Shells on Li River' pictures
the Sydney Opera House on the Li River, surrounded by spectacular
mountain ranges. Leong creates a series of contrasts within landscapes,
drawing our attention to the symbolic and cultural value that lanscape
holds in the definition of a sense of place.
